  • Wait!  leave processing time and window of opportunity for the child to respond :
provide a longer pause for your child to give them a chance to respond, if they don't answer you then model for them .
  •   Offer choices: 
give options for the child and leave opportunity for them to respond .
  •   Use visuals to support:

visuals can be excellent way yo support early communication 

EX : Daily schedules , and communication boards. 

  •   Comment , don't question:

when you ask child a lot of questions it can end up feelings like a test not aconversation. 

engage with the child in joint activities and comment on what is happening . 

  •   Use simple language:

Use language that is appropriate to the child and keep sentences short and simple.

  •   Add words:

if the child use a sentence or a single word expand on this by adding an appropriate word and model it back to the child. E.X"cup"   "blue cup".
